Men's swimming & diving opens up season with dominant win at Saint Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine - Graduate student Joe Vail and freshman Ryan Emerson each won a pair of events to lead the Husson University men's swimming & diving team to a 149-21 win over host Saint Joseph's College of Maine this afternoon at the Harold Alfond Center pool  in Standish, Maine. The Eagles improve to 1-0 in their season opener, while the Monks fall to 0-1 on the season.

Husson never trailed during the meet, which did not feature any diving events.

Emerson took the 100-yard backstroke by .21 hundredths of second over freshman Alex Walsh with a time 58.01 before touching the wall first in the 100-yard breaststroke as well with a mark of 1:06.76 to win by under one second over Vail. Emerson also earned a second place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle Vail won the 200-yard individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:14.49 and topping the field in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.70.

Graduate student Steven Johnston sprinted to a first-place effort in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.66.

Walsh also won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 12:25.20 in his first individual collegiate race. Sophomore Isaias Therio won the 200-yard freestyle (1:58.70) out-touching his teammate freshman Brayden Champlin (1:58.77) by .07 hundredths of second. Therio grabbed a third place finish in the 100-yard finish to give Husson a one-two-three finish with a time of 55.42. 

Champlin also placed fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:03.14, while sophomore Hunter Jackson registered a third place finish in the 200-yard freestyle before winning the 500-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 5:38.45.

Senior Andrew Cote corrected a pair of second place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.31 and the 100-yard freestyle with a clip of 24.31.

Sophomore Ben Carusi finished third in the 50 free with a time of 24.99 and swam exhibition in the 100-yard free (56.69).

Freshman Chris Salvatore made his Husson debut with a third place showing in the 200-yard individual medley on a time of 2:26.04 and a second place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a mark of 5:47.47.

Freshman Sam Peiser earned a pair of third place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke, while fellow classmate Jacob Brown took third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:10.54.

The group of Jackson, Champlin, Salvatore and Therio earned the victory in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.08, while Johnston, Cote, Brown and Peiser capped the largest margin of victory in program history over the Monks with a winning time of 1:38.86 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Husson returns to the water on Saturday, October 22 when it host the Monks and the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy at 11:00 a.m. for the second annual Husson Relay Meet.
