Butch Babin enters his ninth season as the Husson head women’s swimming & diving coach and the 11th year on the coaching staff in 2017-18.
In 2015-16, Babin guided the women’s team to a 6-4 record in dual meets, setting a single-season record for victories, which included a program record five straight wins. Not only did the women sweep their arc-rival Saint Joseph’s College of Maine for the first time in program history, they picked up a dual meet victory over NCAA Division II Merrimack College, 63-59. With the win over the Warriors, the women’s swimming & diving team became the first team to defeat a higher level NCAA school since the Husson football team defeated NCAA Division I-AA La Salle, 17-7 in 2006 and the first women’s since 2001 when Husson softball picked up a victory over NCAA Division II St. Thomas Aquinas, 14-12.
The women finished fifth overall at the 2015 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship with a GNAC program points’ record of 370, while placing 16th at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving (NEISDA) Championship for their best team finish in program history and a took 23rd at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Swimming and Diving Championship. The women also obliterated the program’s NEISDA Championship points’ record with 168 points, which previously stood at 71 points (2006).
Under his watch, Lara Sarett had the best individual season of any swimmer in program history. She became the first women’s swimmer to claim two All-GNAC honors since the inaugural season of 2005-06, qualify for the ECAC Open Championship, earn GNAC and ECAC weekly awards, while setting eight school records. At the 2016 ECAC Open Championship, Sarett not only became the first Eagle swimmer to compete and qualify for finals, she was the only NCAA Division III swimmer to do so.
In all, both the men's and women's teams combined to set 19 school records in 2015-16.
Babin was named the third head women’s swimming & diving coach in program history on March 11, 2011 after serving two years as interim head coach for the 2007-08 and 2010-11 seasons and an assistant coach from 2008-2010 under current assistant coach Jeff Wren.
Babin also serves as Director of Aquatics and the head men's swimming & diving coach at Husson and the head coach of Hurricane Swim Club, Inc., a USA Swimming age group club team since 2005.
In 18 years in club swimming, Babin has coached numerous ME LSC and Maine High School State quailifers and champions, Eastern Zone Age Group, Sectionals and YMCA National quailifers, and team and state record holders, while serving as ME LSC Zone Team head coach twice. Babin was named ME LSC Coach of the Year in 2010.
Babin graduated from Husson in 1984.
A native of Bangor, Maine, Babin attended John Bapst High School.
