Women's Indoor Track & Field Turns in Strong Showing at Maine State Championships

GORHAM, Maine – Competing in their sixth and final meet of the season on Friday evening, the Husson women's track and field team finished fourth against strong competition at the Maine State Championships but had multiple athletes qualify for the DIII New England Championships at MIT.

Freshman Leah Desjardins placed 5th in the 55 meter. She also set a personal and school record for the event with a time of 7.53.

In the 400 meter, Senior Brooke Hoople won her first state title, becoming the first athlete from Husson to win an indoor state title. She set an indoor personal record, Husson school record, and qualified for the DIII New England Championsm while racing to a commanding win in 59.67 seconds.

Heidi Ntengeri also set a personal record in the 600 meter with a time of 1:48.22 and took 8th place.

Moving to the field events, Jessie Dessert took 8th in the pole vault and tied her personal record on the event. She jumped 2.60 meters.

Casey Modery placed in both the long and triple jump. She took 8th in the long jump with 4.82 meters. She then went on to place 5th in the triple jump with 10.15 meters.

Kerianne Downing was 8th in the high jump with 1.47 meters. She also took 7th in the shot put with 10.38 meters.

Erin Ellison took second in two events. She placed second on the shot put with 11.57 meters.  

Ellison also finished 2nd in weight throw with 15.70 meters which qualifies her for the New England Track and Field Open Championships. This meet pits DI, DII, and DIII athletes against each other. Roughly eight to ten DIII athletes qualify for this meet in the weight throw.

Faith Burnett was 5th in the shot put at 10.81 meters and 5th in the weight throw with 13.81 meters, which qualified her for the DIII New England Championships in both events.

The team took 5th place with 47.5 points. A new record for the team. Colby finished 4th with 139 points, Bowdoin in 3rd at 147.5 points, USM placed 2nd with 155.5 points, and Bates won for the fourth straight year tallying 215.5 points.

The following athletes will be competing in the DIII New England Championships at Massachusetts Institute of Technical in Cambridge, Massachusetts on February 17th and 18th.

Erin Ellison: shot put and weight throw

Faith Burnett: shot put and weight throw

Brooke Hoople: 200m, 400m, and 4x200m relay

Leah Desjardins: 60m and 4x200m relay

Shea Curley: 4x200m relay

Casey Modery: 4x200m relay

This will be the largest group of athletes to represent Husson at the DIII New England Championships for Track and Field.
