Women's Tennis Gets Tripped Up by Castleton, 8-1

CASTLETON, Vt. – The Spartans swept doubles before claiming five of six singles matches to earn an 8-1 conference victory over visiting Husson University on Saturday afternoon.

the Eagles fall to 4-2 and suffer their first league loss (3-1), while Castleton improves to 6-4 and 3-1 in the North Atlantic Conference.

Following a pair of wins at second and third singles, Ciara Bannister and Kirsten Kruk took a major stride toward the overall victory in the top team spot. The duo was able to outlast the Eagles' team of Sarah Smith and Charlotte Bednarz in extra play by a score of 9-7. Bannister and Kruk improve to 5-3 on the year in the number one doubles position.

In singles competition, Megan Nadler continued her impressive season by getting another victory under her belt. The Rutland, Vt. native moved to 9-1 with a comprehensive straight-set 6-3, 6-1 win against Bednarz.

Meanwhile, in the top spot, Bannister snapped a two-match losing streak with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Husson's Smith. Emily MillerAlexis Curley and Kruk also earned individual wins.

The Eagles lone point came at fifth singles where Samantha Dubay battled with Castleton's Danarose Weaverbefore coming away with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph.

Women's tennis returns to the courts at 12:00 pm on Saturday against Massachusetts Liberal Arts.
