BANGOR, Maine – A big day for Husson seniors with both Kathryn McGinnis and Alex Speed each tallying a goal and an assist in their final regular season matchup on Boucher Field. By the end of the match, the Eagles (4-10-1, 3-2-1 NAC) had separated themselves from Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (5-8-1, 1-4-1 NAC) by six goals for a 6-0 shutout conference victory on homecoming. Four additional Eagles were honored today with their last minutes in regular season action on their home turf, Morgan Carver, Kylie O'Connell, Hannah Smith, and Joan Overman.
Kicking off senior day on a high note, the Eagles seized a 1-0 advantage in the 21st minute with goal scored by senior McGinnis for her second of the season. McGinnis one-timed her shot sneaking the ball just inside the left post off a perfectly placed pass by Sydney Morton setting her up with her first career assist.
Once again in the middle of the action, Morton received a lateral ball from Carver and took on the Hornet defense with ease, pulling a couple moves to clear an open shot on her right foot as she aimed towards the opposite corner finding the back of the net. With the goal, Husson doubled their lead midway through the first half.
With less than five minutes remaining in the opening frame, Speed took off on a breakaway sprinting down the field from her own end, waiting for just the right moment to launch a shot towards net. Lauren Young in between the posts for the Hornets, barely got her fingers on the ball tipping it off the post for an incredible save and a wide-open rebound. Arianna McKinnon jumped on the rebound without hesitation and tapped the ball over the goal line into the net to go up 3-0 advancing into halftime.
In the 55th minute, McGinnis sent a driven cross on the ground right through the goal box passing by several players on both teams missing out on multiple scoring opportunities before Mackenzie St. Pierre connected with the ball on the far side of the field for her third goal of the season.
Adding on to the score six minutes later, Overman delivered a perfectly positioned cross for Shannon Dowd to one-time the ball past Young in net. With their fifth goal of the match, Dowd earned her first point as an Eagle.
The Eagles tallied their final point of the afternoon, 6-0, off the boot of senior Speed for the second senior of the night to hit net. Alyssa Driscoll earned the assist on the final goal splitting the defenders with a direct thru ball.
BETWEEN THE POSTS:
Sami Ireland stopped her lone shot of the day off a direct kick just outside the box for the Hornets. Her counterpart, Young started in net earning ten saves by the 69th minute when McCormack subbed in for her, giving up the final goal while tallying three saves throughout 21 minutes.
The Eagles outshot the Hornets, 19-1, on frame while posting a clear advantage in corner kicks as Husson defended well keeping the ball out of their half.
The Eagles will close out their regular season with a conference matchup on the road at UMaine-Presque Isle on Tuesday, October 23rd with an early start at 2:00 p.m.
