CASTINE, Maine – The Husson University women's soccer team defeated Maine Maritime Academy 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.
With 14 minutes left in the first half, Leah Hibbad had the best scoring opportunity of the half when she found herself alone with the MMA keeper, but Emily Conway of the Mariners came out of net to challenge Hibbad and broke up the scoring opportunity.
The two teams battled to scoreless draw in the first half, with the Mariners holding a narrow 4-3 edge in shots.
The Eagles broke the stalemate in the 64th minute when Taylor Fortin played a ball at midfield to Hibbad, who beat a charging Conway for her 16th goal of the season.
The Mariners continued to fight but could not find the back of the net and the Eagles hung on for the victory.
Sami Ireland earned the win in net for Husson, while Conway ended the afternoon with three saves in the loss.
The Eagles improve to 6-4 on the season and 5-1 in NAC play, while the Mariners fall to 4-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Husson returns to action next Sunday, October 8 when they travel to Bowdoin for a non-conference matchup at 1:30 pm.
