Eagles Stopped by Spartans

Castleton, VT – The Husson University women's lacrosse team ran into a hot Spartan team on Saturday as host Castleton remains unbeated in conference play. Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) celebrated senior day in style, scoring four goals and handing out an assist in a 17-1 win in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) East Division women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The lone senior of the 2012 squad, Mazzola needed five points for 150 in her career and did just that on a day she was honored prior to the game alongside a host of family and friends.

With the win Castleton improves to 7-5 overall and remains unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play. Husson falls to 3-9, 1-4.

Castleton controlled play from the opening draw, racing out to a 10-0 lead by the 17-minute mark. Mazzola scored three goals during the opening surge, while JenniLee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Kate Auer (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) each potted a pair.

The Spartans built a 15-0 lead by halftime as Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) and Mariah Lesure (Vernon, Vt.) each scored twice over the opening 30 minutes.

Content to move the ball in the attacking third, Castleton turned a 25-0 halftime advantage in shots into a 27-4 final margin.

Husson got a goal back in the second half to avoid the shutout as Kim Gambon (Walpole, Mass.) scored off a Hayley Thibeau (Gardiner, Maine) assist 4:45 into the second stanza.

Kaleigh Morneau (Twin Mountain, N.H.) started for the Eagles and picked up four saves in just over 13 minutes, while Kayla Guerrette (Frenchville, Maine) stopped two shots in relief.

Castleton starting goaltender Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) went untested over 21-plus minutes of action before being lifted in favor of Kelsey MacDonald (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) who made three saves over the final 38-plus.

Husson wraps up the regular season Wednesday at Thomas at 3:30 pm while Castleton will travel to Norwich Thursday for a 4 pm non-league game.
