Bangor, ME - The Husson University women's lacrosse team was started their 2012 season with a game to forget, falling to the Nor'Easters of the University of New England 20-6 in a dreary day at Boucher Field in Bangor.
The Eagles were able to recover from an early deficit to put some offense on the board, but in the end it was not enough to get back into the game. Caitlyn Stauffer (Brookfield, CT) put together a solid game despite the loss scoring four goals in the game for Husson. Kim Gambon (Walpole, MA) scored one and assisted on another for two points, while Steph Eaton (Pittston, ME) also picked up two points, with both of hers coming on assists.
As a team, Husson was better on the ground balls, picking up 25 to their opponent's 22. The Eagles were out-shot buy a substantial margin taking 23 while the Nor'Easters hurled 42 towards the cage. Husson was 10-14 (71.4%) on clear attempts while UNE cleared 13 of 14 attempts for 92.8%. Husson was 1-2 on extra player opportunities and held the Nor'Easters to 1-5 while down a player.
UNE was led by attacker Gina Newsome (Danbury, CT) who out-scored Husson on her own, scoring seven goals and assisting five more for an impressive 12 points on the day. Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, NY) scored five goals and helped out another for six points, while Rachel Schwarner (Holderness, NH) had four points (2G 2A) and Cara Cole (Norwood, MA) scored a hat trick in the game as well.
The Nor'Easters jumped out to an early three-goal lead in the first four minutes, and got an extra player opportunity at the 25 minute mark. Tavella scored off a Newsome assist, sparking another UNE run, netting four goals in the next five minutes to take an 8-0 lead with 20:05 left in the first half. Seven minutes later, Nicolle Steel (Ocean City, NJ) converted a free position shot - her only score in the game - to bring the Nor'Easter lead to 9.
Husson got on the board with 8:32 remaining in the half when Haley Huntington (West Gardiner, ME) scored her first point as an Eagle when she put a free position shot in the bottom left corner of the net, making the score 9-1. UNE added another four minutes later on another Newsome goal that completed her first hat trick with 4:18 left in the first. The Eagles came to within nine again at 2:53 remaining in the first on a Stauffer free position goal, and at the half the score was 10-2 in favor of the visitors.
After the break, Cole got things started again quickly, netting her second just over a minute in. After another Nor'Easter goal a minute later, UNE boasted a 12-2 lead with 27:22 left to play.
Husson netted a pair to bring the deficit back to single digits when Gambon scored off an Abi Staab (Berlin, VT) assist, and Stauffer added an extra player goal on an assist from Eaton at 25:50 in the second. UNE came back with a five goal run over the next ten minutes to bring the score to 16-4 with 16:27 left to play before Stauffer stopped the run on her third goal of the game from an Eaton assist.
UNE rebounded on a goal from Cassidy Ruocco (Dover, NH) but Stauffer answered on an assist from Gambon to make it 17-6 with 9:35 remaining in the game. The Nor'Easters finished the game on a 3-0 run including Tavella's seventh with just 28 seconds left to play and the score would go final at 20-6.
The Eagles come back to play again at Boucher Field on Thursday when they host the Monks of St. Joseph's College for a 4:00 pm start. The University of New England will travel to Clermont, FL for a pair of games this weekend when they take on Franklin Pierce at noon on Saturday the 17th, and play again on Monday the 19th against UMass Dartmouth at 6:30 pm.
