Women's Basketball Cruises by Green Mountain, 67-52

BANGOR, MAINE - The Husson University women's basketball team (11-8, 9-3 NAC) defeated the Green Mountain Eagles (4-13, 1-11 NAC) 67-52. Husson tallied 38 rebounds and 14 steals to propel them over Green Mountain at Newman Gymnasium.

THE STORY:

The Eagles started off strong going on a 6-0 run in the opening minutes of the game. Husson grabbed a 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Green Mountain battled back from an early deficit keeping within striking distance of the lead. Green Mountain's Mercedes Rideout made several key three-pointers in the first half, while Husson's Sami Ireland dominated down low getting 14 points in the first half.

In the second quarter, back and forth baskets by both teams kept the game close. In the final minutes before the half, Sarah Bragg made a three-pointer then following it up with a quick steal giving the Eagles a small cushion. Going into the half, Husson out rebounding Green Mountain 20-17 helped them to a seven point lead, 29-22.

The third quarter opened with two quick buckets by both teams, but Husson quickly pulled away with an 8-0 run making the score 41-26. The Eagles defense was relentless forcing multiple Green Mountain turnovers including Logan Huckins forcing a ten second violation in the backcourt. A three by Hayden Campbell and layup by Logan Huckins in the final minute of the third gave Husson the 17 point lead going into the final quarter.

Husson built their lead throughout the fourth quarter. Sophomore Sarah Bragg put up several jumpers adding 11 points total. In the final minutes of the game Amanda D'Amico played tough defense giving the Eagles the ball in the final minute of the game.

LEADERS: HUSSON

  • Sophomore center Sami Ireland put up 20 points (career high), 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

  • Sophomore guard Sarah Bragg added 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals.

  • Sophomore Guard Logan Huckins tallied 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 4 steals.

LEADERS: GREEN MOUNTAIN

  • Junior Mercedes Rideout added 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal.

  • Junior Sharena Armstrong had 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

  • Sophomore Taylor Hill put up 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists.

TEAM STATS:

Husson edged Green Mountain in rebounds (38-35), steals (14-4), and assists (19-13). Green Mountain held the advantage in three pointers over the Eagles (8-2).
