WATERVILLE, ME- The Husson University women's basketball team (19-4, 15-2) defeated Thomas College (7-17, 4-13) 75-54, on Thursday evening in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of the Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
Both teams came out evenly matched for most of the first quarter. The action was back and forth. Darla Morales and Kenzie Worcester each knocked down a three. Thomas College did their damage from the free throw line while making eight combined foul shots in the first frame. Amira Jones had five for the Terriers in the first frame. Husson was leading Thomas 17-11 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was a different story. The Eagles came out on fire and sprinted away from the Terriers. Sami Ireland, Sarah Bragg, and Barrett Campbell came off the bench and provided four points apiece for Husson. Three pointers and uncontested lay-ups came in bunches. Thomas knocked down a few threes, but it was not enough to keep up with Husson. A 17-point lead faces the Terriers at the end of the first half.
Ball movement was an obvious point of emphasis for the Eagles, as they worked the ball around the three-point arch throughout the rest of the game. Darla Morales was the recipient of that ball movement. It resulted in two more three pointers for her in the third quarter. Thomas College had the better quarter though. Jordan Turner hit a deep three at 2:22 to pull her Terriers to within nine points. It was the closest they would come to Husson throughout the rest of the game.
Morales came out in the fourth period and did not miss a beat. She hit another three pointer and a couple free throws. The Eagles kept Thomas at arm's length in the final quarter and cruised to a 75-54 win.
Darla Morales lead the victories Eagles with 18 points and snagged five rebounds. Kenzie Worcester tallied 17 points and handed out six assists. Chandler Guerrette was the only other double digit scorer for Husson with 15 points.
Amira Jones paced Thomas with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan Turner came off the bench for the Terriers and tossed in 11 points. Malorie Weaver finished with eight points in a losing effort.
Husson wraps up their regular season on senior night this Saturday, February 18th at 3:00 pm against Maine-Farmington.
