Another Victory for Women's Basketball as They Top Bates, 60-44

BANGOR, Maine – The Husson Women's Basketball team continued their winning start to the 2016-17 season with a 60-44 victory at home against the Bates Bobcats.

The Eagles will take a lot from this win, as they not only improve to 3-0 on the season, but the win also ends an 18-game losing streak against Bates; a span dating all the way back to 1991.

Four of the Eagles players put up double digit points – Chandler Guerrette led all players with 17, Darla Morales scored 13, Kenzie Worcester had 12, and Sami Ireland finished with 10. Guerrette added six assists and five steals, leading all players in both categories. Defensively, Worcester had nine rebounds, while Sarah Bragg pulled down seven rebounds coming off the bench. For the Bobcats, Nina Davenport topped the team with 13 points, while Allie Coppola led all players in rebounds with 13.

Both teams began the match strong, trading shots in an open, end-to-end battle. The first quarter ended even at 16-16, but the second quarter was a different story as Husson out-scored Bates nine to two. The Eagles controlled the tempo of the game and forced the Bobcats into rushing their passes. The Bobcats were zero-for-13 from the floor in the second quarter.

The Bobcats improved greatly after half-time scoring 15 points, including four shots from behind the arch. The Eagles improved, as well, scoring 20 points behind an impressive defensive performance, which saw Husson pull down 12 rebounds and rack up five steals. Ireland and Danae Johnson epitomized the team's hustle in the final minute of the quarter when Johnson charged down the court for the layup after a strong steal from Ireland

Husson continued their dominance into the fourth quarter. Guerrette and Morales buried back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Eagles' lead to 17 points, before Worcester combined with Maegan True to put the finesse on the win, True putting away the cross-court pass from Worcester.

The Eagles closed out the win 60-44, continuing their undefeated start to the season, as Bates (2-1) suffered their first loss of the season. The Women's Basketball team will hope to carry that winning momentum forward as they face-off against Maine Maritime on Tuesday, December 6, away from home.
