Softball Wins 8th NAC Championship, Beats NEC, 4-1

BANGOR, Maine - The #1 Husson University softball team (21-13) knocked off #2 New England College (17-23) by the final score of 4-1 in the NAC Championship Game at O'Keefe Field on the campus of Husson University on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened:

Bottom of the 4th: The Eagles struck first as Tamara Aunchman (Panton, Vt.) with a single to center field to score Madelyn Fowler (East Barre, Vt.) from second base. Bri Brochu (Pittston, Maine) continued the inning as she hit an RBI-double to score Aunchman. Chloe Gorey (Scarborough, Maine) ended the scoring in the inning as she hit an RBI-single to score Brianna Bires (Bucksport, Maine) and make it 3-0 Eagles.

Top of the 6th: The Pilgrims score their first run of the contest as Julia D'Andrea (Greenwich, Conn.) with a single to center field as she scored Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.) and cut the Eagles' lead to 3-1.

Bottom of the 6th: The Eagles responded as Brochu with an RBI-triple to score Paige Veilleux-Adams (Winslow, Maine) and make it 4-1 Eagles.

Top of the 7th: Jen Jones (Acton, Maine) finished off the game by striking out two batters as the Eagles are 2018 NAC Softball Champions.

Batters: Husson

  • Brochu with three hits and two RBI.

  • Gorey with three hits and one RBI.

  • Aunchman with two hits, a run, and an RBI.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Jen Jones (W, 16-7) pitched a complete game, allowed a run on six hits, and struck out seven.

Batters: New England College

  • Helmedach with a run scored and a hit.

  • D'Andrea with a hit and an RBI.

Pitchers: New England College

  • Taylor Barbour (Bay Shore, N.Y) (L, 12-12) pitched six innings, allowed four runs on eleven hits, walked a batter, and struck out six.

Husson will represent the North Atlantic Conference in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. The selection show for the tournament is on Monday, May 7th at 1 p.m. New England College's season has come to an end.
