TUCSON, AZ. – Husson University (1-5) dropped two games on their third day at the Tucson Invitational Games on Wednesday. The Eagles lost the first game of the day to Otterbein (5-4) 12-0, and dropped the afternoon game to #11 St. John Fisher (4-5) 7-0.
GAME ONE: Otterbein 12, Husson 0
Otterbein used 15 hits to get the win over Husson on Wednesday afternoon. Otterbein had four repeat hitters and eight doubles on the day. The Eagles battled through the first inning defensively allowing just three runs. Otterbein pitcher Gabby Johnson was able to keep the Eagles to a 1-2-3 inning.
In the top of the second inning, Sophomore Jen Jones came in relief for Junior Olivia Smith. On Jones's first pitch a line drive was hit to Smith in right who made the play then threw to Chloe Gorey at second for a double play to end the inning.
Husson saw their first hit of the game come in the third inning from Freshman Shelby Burge who drove a pitch back up the middle for a single. Burge was later stranded at first after Johnson was able to get a foul out and two strikeouts.
The Eagles made a run in the bottom of the fifth to try and stay in the game. It started with Burge reaching on an error by the shortstop, Burge then moved to second on a ground out from Kylie Cunningham. A strikeout left Husson with one out to work with when Bri Brochu bunt singled up the first baseline and Madelyn Fowler was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Gorey. Gorey grounded out to the shortstop on a close play to end the game.
ON THE MOUND:
- Junior Olivia Smith pitched 1.1 innings giving up 7 hits and 5 earned runs.
- Sophomore Jen Jones pitched 3.2 innings giving up 8 hits and 5 earned runs.
OFF THE BAT:
- Brochu was 1-3 with a single
- Burge was 1-2 with a single.
- Fowler was 0-1 and reached based twice via hit by pitch.
GAME TWO: St. John Fisher 7, Husson 0
The Eagles faced #11 St. John Fisher for their second game of the day. Husson saw their first baserunner of the day in first inning off a Madelyn Fowler single to right field. Fowler was later stranded as St. John Fisher pitcher, Monica Moses, was able to get back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Sophomore Jen Jones took the mound for the Eagles. Jones worked through a tough lineup giving up two hits and two runs in the first.
Junior Olivia Smith got things going for Husson again in the fourth with a ground rule double over the left fielder's head. Smith then advanced to third on a wild pitch but would be stranded as St. John Fisher made the plays in the field to end the inning. Kylie Cunningham and Morgan Coleman were the only other players to collect hits for the Eagles. Husson faced a tough match-up and lost the aftrernoon game 7-0.
ON THE MOUND:
- Sophomore Jen Jones pitched 6.0 innings for the Eagles giving up 5 earned runs on 10 hits and had 2 strikeouts.
OFF THE BAT:
- Fowler went 1-3 with one hit.
- Smith was 1-3 with one hit.
- Coleman was 1-3 with one hit.
- Cunningham was 1-3 with one hit.
Husson returns to action tomorrow for their last games of their spring trip at 9:00 AM MST vs Northland and 11:00 AM MST vs Coe in Tucson, Ariz. at Julie Reitan Complex.
