LEWISTON, ME – The Husson University softball team played two games against Bates, winning game one 1-0 and losing game two 4-0. The Eagles record is now 18-10 and the Bobcats are 6-17.
Husson and Bates combined for only eight hits in the opener as it was a pitcher's duel.
Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME) picked up the win for the Eagles as she pitched a complete game shutout. Merrill only allowed two hits and one walk while striking out seven batters. With the win she improves to 9-4 on the season.
Kelsey Freedman pitched well for Bates in the loss, as she went the distance and allowed just one run on six hits. Freedman also struck out eight Eagle batters.
Kayla Merrill and Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH) each had two hits for the Eagles.
Bates scored two runs in the second and third inning to pick up the win in game two.
Paige Ahlholm doubled to right center which brought Brenna Callahan home to get the Bobcats on the board. Bates added to their lead on a Husson error, which allowed Jenney Abbott to score.
The Bobcats would pick up two more runs on a two-run homer from Callahan to complete the scoring.
Callahan and Freedman combined to shut down the Eagles hitters. Lyndsay Merrill had two of the seven Husson hits.
Alannah Healy (Brockton, MA) took the loss for the Eagles giving up two runs on three hits in one inning of work.
Husson will get back into North Atlantic Conference play Saturday when they host Lyndon State. Game one of the doubleheader will start at 1:00.
