Kayla Merrill Pitches Softball to Pair of Wins

WINTER HAVEN, FL - Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME) pitched 9.1 innings in two contests and gave up just two hits to lead the Husson University softball team to a 4-0 win over Skidmore in eight innings and a 9-7 win over Springfield. Husson improves to 5-7 on the season.

Against Skidmore, Merril pitched all 8.0 innings, struck out 10 and gave up just one hit as the Eagles erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth to get the win.

Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME) doubled home Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH) for what proved to be the wining run. Erika Parker (Madison, ME), Kayla Merrill and Spiers got each added RBIs to provide insurance runs and Kayla Merrill made sure the runs stood up.

Lyndsay Merrill (Bethel, ME) went 3-4 with a triple to lead the Husson attack.

In the Springfield contest, Kayla Merrill came in relief and pitched 1.1 innings and gave up just one hit to earn the save.

Husson took a 5-1 lead after three, but Springfield tied the game in the top of the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Allie Hill (Calais, ME) came up with the bases loaded and hit a three-run double that broke the tie and was too much for Springfield to overcome.

Chelsea Brennan (Woonsocket, RI) went 3-3 with a RBI while Shaniah Haskell (Hermon, ME) was 2-4 with two RBI.

Alannah Healy (Brockton, MA) got the win as she gave up two earned runs. Her record goes to 2-3 on the season.
