WINTER HAVEN, FL - The Husson University softball team exploded for six runs in the fourth inning en route to a 9-3 win over Wheaton (MA). Husson is now 3-4 on the year while Wheaton is 6-3.
Wheaton struck first, scoring twice in the top of the first. Husson would tie it in the bottom half, with Erika Parker (Madison, ME) and Shaniah Haskell (Hermon, ME) walking in Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME) and Lyndsay Merrill (Bethel, ME). Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH) then gave the Eagles the lead on a fielder's choice that scored Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA).
Wheaton came right back to knot the game at three in the top o the second, and the teams remained tied until the bottom of the fourth.
In the fourth, Deb Colpitts (Levant, ME) got things going when she put the ball in play and Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME) was able to score on an error. Lynsday Merrill followed that up with a base hit to score Brianna Bires (Bucksport, ME) before Casey Lopes delivered a double to score Lyndsay Merrill, Colpitts and Kayla Merrill. Parker added some insurance with a single to score Casey Lopes.
Kayla Merrill came into pitch, and went 4.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits. She got the win and improved her record to 1-2.
Kayla and Lyndsay Merrill each finished 2-4 while Lopes finished 1-3 with the key double in the fourth.
Emily Bouthillette went 3-3 for Wheaton while Alison Cox took the loss and her record goes to 1-1.
