Ryan and K. Merrill Pitch Combined Perfect Game as Husson Wins Two Against MMA

Bangor, ME – Husson softball pitchers Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) and Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME) were the story of the day, as they pitched a combined perfect game two against the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy. Husson (21-8-1, 12-0 NAC) took the first game 7-2, and beat MMA (11-14, 7-7 NAC) by a score of 9-0 in five innings in the second game on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1: Husson 7, Maine Maritime 2

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the first when Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME) reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) to second; seeing Courtney Hill (Calais, ME) out at third, and sending K. Merrill home for a run.

MMA briefly took the lead in the top of the third, as Andi Flannery (East Machias, ME) and Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, ME) each notched a run. The lead was short-lived, as Husson's C. Hill scored off a Schultz single in the bottom of the third to tie things up.

Heidi Shaw (Manchester, ME), Lyndsey Merrill (Bethel, ME), Mortensen, and C. Hill all scored in the fourth inning to put Husson back on top, and K. Merrill added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the game to its final score, 7-2.

Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, ME) pitched seven innings for the win, throwing 65 strikes in 89 pitches, including 9 strikeouts. Abby Yeo (Bucksport, ME) pitched six innings for the loss.

Game 2: Husson 9, Maine Maritime 0

In the second game of the day, Amanda Ryan pitched a perfect three innings, and Kayla Merrill came in in the fourth to complete Ryan's work and give Husson a perfect game on the mound.

Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME) got the scoring started in the bottom of the second when she scored on a Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME) home run to left field. Next, Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, MA) hit a single, Shaw singled and advanced Souza to third, and K. Merrill reached first on a fielding error to send Souza across home plate, making it 2-0 in favor of Husson.

In the bottom of the third, Mortensen, C. Hill, Mallory Conary (Warren, ME), Overlock, L. Merrill, and Sargent all scored for the Eagles to bring the score to 9-0. The game ended after five innings.

Overlock and Sargent each scored two runs for the Eagles, and Sargent had three RBI's. Ryan picked up the win for Husson, while Erica Taylor (Mesquite, TX) got the loss.

Husson will continue NAC play with a doubleheader on the road at New England College on Friday, starting at 3:00 PM. Maine Maritime will play at Maine-Farmington on Friday starting at 3:30.
