Husson Nabs Afternoon Doubleheader with USM

Bangor, ME - Husson softball took both games of a doubleheader with the University of Southern Maine Wednesday afternoon by a score of 4-2 and 15-2. Kayla Merrill picked up the win in both games after entering in the 6th in game one, and going the distance in game two.

Game 1 - 4-2 Husson

The Eagles lit up the scoreboard at O'Keefe Field first, scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second as pinch runner Mallory Conary slid in under the tag at the plate. Husson led 1-0.

USM pitcher Stef Stockwell helped her cause in the top of the third, homering over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.

Husson's Melissa Souza then added a long bomb of her own to left to earn her first hit on the season in the bottom half. Souza turned on an inside pitched and belted it over the left field fence to take the lead back, 2-1.

In the fifth, the Huskies tied the game at 2-2 with a Katie Davis single to right center scoring Lillian Cooper.

The Eagles took the 4-2 victory in the bottom of the sixth on a Breanna Martin pinch-hit homer, scoring Allison Hill and sealing the victory for the Eagles.

Game 2 - 15-2 Husson

The story of game two for the Eagles was their offense. Husson managed 15 runs on 12 hits in a mercy-shortened game that saw the Huskies commit 4 errors.

Husson put up 12 runs in the second inning, five of which before the first out. The Eagles more than batted around sending 17 to the plate on two hits and two errors.

Merrill pitched 5 strong innings, allowing only six hits and two runs with three K's.

The Eagles will be back in action once again tomorrow as they take on Thomas College at 3:00 and 5:00pm.
