Columbus, GA - Husson softball competed in the final day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic in the Copper Bracket Round Robin. The Eagles dropped an early game to Ithaca 8-4 and closed out the tournament with a 14-6 victory over Hiram College.
Game 1 vs. Ithaca College
The Eagles scored 2 runs in the first, but Ithaca countered with 5. Husson got within two runs to bring it to 6-4 in the fourth inning, but Ithaca scored two more in the fifth inning to bring the game to its final score, 8-4. Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) pitched for the loss, while Ithaca's Brooke Powers got the win.
Game 2 vs Hiram College
In the Eagles final game of the tournament, Hiram struck first with six runs in the top of the first inning. Husson answered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to a run, 6-5. Husson took the lead in the second with four runs and then added another run in the third to go up 10-6. The Eagles increased their lead in the fifth thanks to three more runs and put the game away with another run in the six to post the 14-6 victory after six innings. First year pitcher Emily Staples (Caribou, ME) got the win, while Taylor Miller picked up the loss.
The NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic featured 28 teams and included 14 that are ranked in the latest NFCA Division III poll. Participating teams competed in pool play with three round-robin games. Following pool play, teams were assigned to brackets based on their round-robin records. Husson will continue on its southern spring break trip with four games in the Orange Blossom Games in Panama City, Florida. The Eagles will face Messiah and Claflin in Tuesday games and Messiah and Kellogg on Wednesday.
