Eagles Outmatched in Orono

Orono, Maine - The Husson University softball team was unable to mount much offense against their Division I foe the University of Maine on Tuesday, falling to the host Black Bears 8-0 after six innings at Kesock Field.

Husson managed four hits, two of which came off the bat of first year third baseman Victoria Overlock (Bethel, ME) who continues to be the big swinger for the Eagles hitting in the number three spot.

Maine used a 13-hit attack coupled with a solid shutout outing from pitcher Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) to defeat the Eagles. EmJ Fogel (Vienna, Va.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and one run scored while fellow freshman Jessica Burk(Warrenton, Va.) also went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Maine's 11th win of the season.

The Black Bears wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they plated a run in the bottom of the first inning. Fogel started off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second after Jessica Burk (Warrenton, Va.) ripped a single through the left side. Fogel would score the game's first run after Jean Stevens (Albany, Ore.) singled through the hole on the right side.

Maine added another run in the home half of the second inning. Jennifer Eberhardt (Glendale, Ariz.) began the inning with a single over the third baseman. Margaret Hilton (Lyndonville, Vt.) followed by ripping a ball down the right field line that tipped of the right fielder's glove as Hilton reached on the Husson error. Hilton then advanced to second after a fielder's choice and scored after Lindsey Jenkins (Greenwich, Conn.) reached on an errant throw by the Husson shortstop.

Burk began the bottom of the third with a double to the gap in right center and advanced to third on a groundout by Nikki Byron (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.). Burk would later score on a single to shallow center field by Hilary Kane (Concord, N.H.).

The Black Bears extended their lead to 5-0 after four innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hilton and Brynne Davis (Winslow, Maine) started the rally with back-to-back singles. Jenkins moved the runners up with a sac-bunt, giving Maine runners on second and third with one out. Fogel followed by ripping a single through the right side, plating both Hilton and Davis.

Maine added a run in the bottom of the fifth when Jenkins' bases loaded single through the right side allowed Byron to score from third, giving the Black Bears a 6-0 lead.

With two away in the bottom of the sixth, Maine would look to put the game away. Byron started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single up the middle by Kane. Kristen Koslosky (Castro Valley, Calif.) entered the game to pinch run at second for Byron. Eberhardt then stepped in and singled to second base. However, Koslosky drew a throw from the Husson first baseman that sailed over third base and into left field, allowing Koslosky to score followed by Kane who plated Maine's eighth run, ending the game.

Beth Spoehr (Appleton, Wis.) pitched solid in the circle for the Black Bears as she earned her fourth win, and third shutout victory, after going six innings while giving up four hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Becca McCarty took the loss for Husson as she falls to 6-6 on the season after going four innings while giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits while fanning one.
