Gorham, ME - The Husson University Eagles softball team cranked out 25 hits and scored 24 runs over two games to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a pair of non-conference games Wednesday afternoon at Towers Field in Gorham, Maine. Husson defeated Southern Maine 7-2 in the opener and then earned a 17-0 five-inning win in the nightcap. With the pair of wins, Husson improves to 12-7 on the season. The Huskies fall to 0-14 with the two losses.
In the opener, sophomore Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine) scattered 10 hits over seven innings with three strikeouts and two walks to earn her fourth win of the season. McCarty was also 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI including a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Freshman Ashley Smith (Ellsworth, Maine) also had two RBI for the Eagles.
Senior Caitlin LeBorgne (Scarborough, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with four walks. LeBorgne collected two of the Huskies' 10 hits in the game. Sophomores Annie Mitchell (Gorham, Maine) and Meghan Rumore (Manchester, N.H.) each had two hits and an RBI. Junior Stefanie Stockwell (Buxton, Maine) was 3-for-4 at the plate.
In the second game, Husson jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back en route to the inning-shortened victory. Eleven different Eagles had at least one hit in the 13-hit attack, led by two hits each from freshman Victoria Overlock (Belfast, Maine) and junior Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine). Junior Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, Maine) had three RBI on a 1-for-2 effort at the plate.
Junior Kody Lyon (Dalton, N.H.) improved her record to 6-2 on the season holding USM to five hits to earn the shut out.
Husson hosts Castleton State for a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader on Friday at 3:00 pm at O'Keefe Field. Southern Maine travels to Salem State on Thursday at 4:00 pm for a pair of non-conference games.
