Kissimmee, FL - The Husson softball team would be hard pressed to find a more difficult task to start the 2012 season than running into the #13 ranked Coast Guard Academy. That is how they opened up the season, and in their first contest they were blanked by the Bears 7-0 at the Osceola County Softball Complex Monday afternoon.
Husson was able to eek out a hit in the bottom of the 6th, coming from a pinch-hit attempt by first year player Jessica Poulin (Albion, ME). That was all for the Eagles' offense as they were up against senior All-American hurler Hayley Feindel (River Ridge, LA) who starts the year 3-0 after the victory over the Eagles, improving her career wins total to 106 (just 14 shy of the Division III record).
For the Coast Guard, Chloe Harmon (Escondido, CA) went 3-4 at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in another in a breakout game for the first year outfielder. First year leadoff hitter Erin Lisko (Waynesboro, PA) was 2-4 with a run scored and designated player Summer Dupler (Beverly Hills, FL) had two RBI while going 1-3 at the plate. Feindel went the distance and struck out 13 allowing one hit and no walks.
The Coast Guard Academy scored two runs in the top of the second, taking advantage of inopportune fielding errors by the Eagles. Devin Fellman (New Port Richey, FL) reached on an error to open the inning and later scored on Harmon's double. Harmon advance to third on a wild pitch and then came around on Dupler's single.
Feindel settled in, striking out the next six batters she faced giving the Bears momentum to bat around in the fourth. The USCGA took advantage of three Eagle errors, mixing in four hits of their own for a 5 run inning to close out the scoring on the day.
The Eagles finish the day with another contest at 5:00 pm, this time against the Terriers of Hiram College. The Coast Guard Academy will take on Albion at the same time.
