Eagles and Vikings Split a Pair at Salem State

Salem, MA – The Husson University Eagles split a double header with the Salem State Lady Vilkings at Alumni Field on Thursday afternoon. Salem State took game one 3-1, but lost the back-end 2-1. Salem State improves to 15-13 on the season. Husson University's record stands at 10-12. 

Hurler Lauren DiCredico (Tewksbury, MA) stifled the Eagles lineup in a 3-1 victory in the first game of the double header. DiCredico earned her sixth win of the season allowing one earned run one on three hits and six strikeouts. Kody Lyon (Dalton, NH) took the loss for Husson. Lyon allowed three earned runs on seven hits while striking out two batters.

The Lady Vikings put the first run on the board in the third inning when Ashley Aldred (Arlington, MA) scored on a passed ball. In the same inning, Michelle Grifoni (Peabody, MA) batted in Taylor Orlando (Danvers, MA) on a ground rule double that one-hopped the right field fence to give Salem State a 2-0 lead.

Husson's Kara Poirier's (Berlin, NH) ground out to third baseman Jenna Lentine (Methuen, MA) and the fielder's choice drove in pinch runner Kristen Sousa (Detroit, ME) to cut the Viking lead in half. 

Salem State tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning when Gabbie Vitale (Danvers, MA) crossed the plate as a result of Lauren Garchinsky's (Saugus, MA) sacrifice fly to deep center field. Gabbie Vitale (Danvers, MA) and Lentine were both 2-for-3 at the plate

Starting pitcher Kelly Naeglin (Cohasset, MA) led the Eagles to a 2-1 victory in the second game. She went the distance to earn her second win of the season. The freshman gave up three hits and one earned and out four batters. 

Katelynn Fanning (East Boston, MA) took the mound for the Lady Vikings to begin the second game. Fanning took the loss with two earned runs and three strike outs in 4.1 innings pitched. Nicole Wilson came on for 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

The game was scoreless until the Eagles struck in the sixth inning. Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) tripled to right file scoring Courtney Hill (Calais, ME). Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, ME) followed up with a single to bring home Mortensen and the give Husson a 2-0 advantage.

Salem State made noise in the bottom of the seventh. Grifoni hit a blooper to shallow center field that dropped for a single. Jeanette Doucette (Andover, MA) drove her in with a double to center to score Grifoni and bring the Vikings within one run of tying the game. However, Naegelin got Michelle Flower (Reading, MA) to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

The Husson University Eagles will host Johnson State College for a double header on Saturday afternoon at one o'clock. The Salem State Vikings will travel to Buzzard's Bay to take on the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers in a double header at noon.
