Rookies Blaze Trail for Men's Cross Country Third Place Finish at Mariner Invitational

BELFAST, Maine - Husson men's cross country was just barely knocked out of second place by Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon at the Mariner Invitational as both teams finished tied with 55 points. Maine Maritime's sixth fastest runner crossed the finish line just a couple heads in front of Husson's sixth place finisher, Joey Gay, to help clinch the higher standing, despite the Eagles posting a faster team average in the 5k with a time of 18:21 to the Mariners' 18:24. Husson competed against six other schools with sophomore Zach Hartman capturing third place out of all the runners with a speedy time of 17:20.

Two more Eagles posted top-ten times, freshman Joel Bond (5th) followed Hartman's trail of dust crossing the finish line just seconds later, 17:24, and Ricky Smith (8th) sprinted in at 18:09.

Finishing as the final scorers for Husson at the invite, freshman Reece Rodrigue captured a time of 18:31 good enough for 14th and junior Patrick Welch finished in 20:23 (25th).

The Eagles will have a couple weeks off from competition before traveling to Brunswick, Maine for the Maine State Championship at Bowdoin College.
