BANGOR, Maine – Senior Andrew Balsamo notched a top-10 performance to lead the Husson University men's cross country team in the Husson Harrier Invitational at Saxl Park in Bangor, Maine on Saturday morning.
Balsamo finished the 6.92 kilometer race in 26:05 to place 9th, the highest placed finish by an Eagle runner in program history. He was followed by his teammate Josh Wheeler with a time of 27:52 good for 20th, while Nick Young finished 22nd in 28:07. Jacob West and Patrick Welch placed 25th and 27th respectively in 28:31 and 29:00 to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
Other Eagles who ran on the day were Spencer Canham in 31st with a 29:21, Lucas Kinney placed 32nd in 29:26, and followed by Francesco Wright in 33rd in 29:46, Tristan Kaldenberg finished 34th in 29:52, Patrik Orcutt ran a 30:25 good for 36th, Caleb Marsh placed 37th with a 30:43, while Derek Hawes and Adam Hitchcock completed the course in 31:16 and 32:36 for a 39th and 42nd place finishes.
"The men started the race strong and were able to work through the hard course and hot conditions to move up through the pack," said head coach Kate Goupee. "It was a very good home meet for them."
Josh Shanks from University of New Brunswick at Fredericton won the race with a time of 24:15. University of Southern Maine won the meet with 24 points, followed by New Brunswick-Fredericton with 57, and Saint Joseph's (Maine) with 83. Husson finished 4th with 95, tying the best team finish in program history.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Bowdoin Invitational.
