BOSTON, Mass. — The Husson University men's and women's cross country opened their season by competing in the 2016 Fens Classic this past weekend, featuring a two mile course for the women and a 5k for the men through Boston's Backbay Fens area. The women took third overall out of five teams and six programs that represented. The men finished 4th out of 5th overall.
In the women's two mile race, Brandeis combined for a perfect team low score of 15 points to lead the five team field. The Judges were followed by Simmons College (50), Husson University (95), Emmanuel College (99), and Lasell College (131).
Freshmen Heidi Ntengeri led the way for Husson in 12th out of 57 girls running sub 13 for the 2 mile course in her first college race.
Morgan Clifford 15th place with a two mile PR including faster than track 3200. Freshmen Lindsey Joliat was 3rd for Husson also running her first college race in 18th place. Rounding out top five for Husson were Sam Martin in 27th place and nearly a minute faster than when she last covered the course in 2014 and Shannon Bunce in 37th place.
On the men's side, the Judges tallied 16 team points to earn the win over the four other men's teams in the 5k event. The Judges were trailed by the host Saints in second (72), Thomas College (74), Husson University (96), and Lasell College (106).
Leading the way for the men was Andrew Balsamo in 17:05 placing in 13th. Nick Young performed exceptionally well as he ran nearly 2 minutes faster than his 2014 time. The freshmen made their impact quickly take 4th and 5th for the team in Caleb Marsh and Jacob West.
The Eagles will be back in action as they host the Husson Harrier Invitational this weekend, September 10 at Saxl Park at 11:00 a.m. in Bangor, Maine.
