QUINCY, Mass. – Late goal by Eastern Nazarene College (4-7-1) lifts the Lions over the Husson University (4-8-1) men's soccer team, 2-1, on Saturday evening at Creedon Field.
The Lions raced out to a 1-0 edge just 83 seconds into the contest as Edmilson Centeio headed home the first goal of the night off of a corner kick served into the box by Sunil Lepcha.
Husson pulled even at 1-1 in the 42nd minute as Ian Lee curled in a free kick to notch his fourth tally of the season as the two teams advanced into halftime with a tie.
Eastern Nazarene produced seven shots in the opening half while Husson fired five.
With the end of regulation fast approaching, both teams were vying to pull ahead for the win, but the Lions found the back of the net first as they reclaimed a one-goal advantage in the 84th minute. Rookie Matt Cawthorne found the goal as he poked in a through-ball fed by Noah Roberts to help Eastern Nazarene come out on top, 2-1.
"It's tough to find the right words to say about tonight," reflected Head Coach Gavin Penny. "We have worked so hard and battled for 90 minutes and fallen short of a win again. We defended well for most of the game, had plenty of opportunities to score, but still couldn't find a winning goal. We are a young group and we are making mistakes that are costly. The guys are trying and the hope is that they will learn from their mistakes which in turn will hopefully help us to turn these narrow defeats into victories."
