BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University men's soccer team defeated Maine Maritime Academy, 1-0 on a cold, overcast Saturday afternoon in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) quarterfinal match at Boucher Field.
Both teams were held scoreless throughout the first half due to solid defense and excellent goaltending. The Mariners had their chance on a shot from Matthew Caron that rocketed off the cross bar, but could not come away with a goal going into the half.
Miguel Caballero broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 63rd minute on a through ball pass from Shubham Bodke. Caballero took a defender on one v one and buried the goal past the Mariners' goalkeeper Kyle Townsend.
For the Eagles, Caballero lead with five shots, three of which were on goal while Matthew Crockett delivered four shots. For Maine Maritime Caron and Erik Andreasen lead with two shots apiece while Abraham Vongkhamdy tallied one shot. Townsend had four saves with one goal against. Cody Gross was credited the win as he had one save in the afternoon.
"Can't speak highly enough of our performance today," says head coach Gavin Penny. "MMA are just relentless and we stepped up to the plate and delivered an effort worthy of a semifinal spot. The lads did everything we had asked from them and Miguel has taken his goal ever so well. Now we have to recoup and get ready for a big semifinal showdown with our noisy neighbors over there in Waterville."
The Eagles will now face No. 1 seeded Thomas on Tuesday November 1st with a time to be determined for the NAC Semifinal.
