Castleton, VT - Fresh off their first round upset of Maine-Farmington in the North Atlantic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament first round, fifth-seeded Husson traveled to top-seeded Castleton for the NAC semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Eagles could not pull off another upset and fell 17-7 to the Spartans.
For Castleton, junior Zach Davidson scored three goals and dished off six assists to become the first Spartan ever to reach 300 career points. Davidson's extraordinary effort led the Spartans to their 11th straight NAC Championship game. The squad has won three of the past four NAC championships, earning three NCAA Tournament berths in the past four years.
Alex Green added four goals for the Spartans, and Will Stuhler scored three. Taylor Swarter finished with one goal and three assists. Nolan Brown (Waterford, CT) and Vinny Visconti (North Andover, MA) each scored three goals for the Eagles.
The Spartans took an early lead with Davidson scoring his 52nd goal of the season in the first minute of play. The goal was answered less than a minute later by the Eagles' Visconti to make it 1-1. Castleton owned the remainder of the quarter though, going on a 6-0 run to finish the frame.
In the second quarter, Husson came out and played even with the Spartans, with each team scoring three goals in the period. Matthew Levins notched a man-down goal for the Spartans to take an 8-1 lead, and Green added his third of the game to make it 9-1. The Eagles finished the half on a 3-1 run with two goals from Brown and another from Brandon Corbo (Merrimack, NH) to make it 10-4 at halftime.
In the third, Castleton shutout the Eagles and extended their lead to 14-4. Green and Davidson each tallied a goal, and Will Stuhler scored two to give the Spartans momentum heading into the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Davidson finished his night with 9:43 remaining when Will Stuhler buried his pass for a goal.
The Spartans went on to close out the game, earning the 17-7 win. Louis Alhage, Luc Leblanc, and Dillon Robinson all registered six ground balls apiece to lead the Spartans. Zach Devoid scooped five and Owen Hartman tallied five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers. Peter Latulippe earned the win in net for the Spartans with seven saves on the night. Eric Horsfield jumped in net in the final five minutes and made one save.
Corbo led the Husson defensive effort, snagging five ground balls. James Seager (Gilford, NH), Derek Johnson (South Berwick, ME), and Matt Catalano (North Attleboro, MA) each registered a pair of caused turnovers to lead the visiting squad. Eric Lund (Mansfield, MA) took the loss for the Eagles, making 11 saves on the evening.
Castleton will host the NAC Championship on Friday, May 2 at Spartan Stadium, while Husson's season ends at 5-8.
