Bangor, ME - In any sport, the week leading up to the season opener is full of excitement and emotion. While the Eagles men's lacrosse team is trying to keep that energy bottled up in preparation for this Sunday's season opener against in-state rival University of New England, the coaching staff added to the excitement with the release of their new uniforms for 2012 and the announcement of this year's captains. Three seniors – Ben Landry, Nick Brown, and Mike Craig – along with two juniors – Alex Ryan and Matt Tabler – have been selected to lead the Eagles in their fourth year of varsity competition.
Lewiston, Maine native Ben Landry will serve as captain for his third year, after serving as both a junior and sophomore. In 2010, Landry led all of NCAA Division III in scoring, averaging 4.44 goals per game. During his junior campaign he led Husson in scoring compiling 36 goals and 12 assists, good for 48 points on the year. Twice Landry has been named to the All North Atlantic Conference Second Team as an attackman. He has played in 39 games and has 148 goals, 42 assists, and 190 points in his career as an Eagle.
Brown, a midfielder from Fort Worth, Texas will be captain for the second season after being named captain of the 2011 squad as a junior. Last season Brown selflessly played the often unheralded role of a short-stick defensive midfielder and was recognized by the North Atlantic Conference as a Second Team Specialty Position Player on the All-Conference Team. He was recently named as an Outstanding Future Professional by the Maine Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MAHPERD). He has played in 38 games as an eagle tallying 51 goals and 32 assists, good for 83 points.
Transfer, Mike Craig, a native of Kennebunk, Maine will round out the senior class representatives in his first year wearing the Green and Gold. Craig will play the long stick midfield position in 2012 after coming to Bangor from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. He will be a big part in the "new look" Husson defense this spring.
Ryan, from Northfield, NH, will also represent the midfielders as a captain. He has played in 36 games for the Eagles scoring 16 goals balanced with 15 assists for 31 points in his career. In his junior year he will be playing a large role in the locker room and on the field as one of the top offensive midfielders.
Rounding out the quintet of captains will be Matt Tabler, a junior defender from Catonsville, MD. Tabler was named to the North Atlantic Conference First Team in both his freshman and sophomore seasons, and is the only two-time First Team representative for the Husson lacrosse program. This winter he was also named to the NAC Pre-Season All-Conference Team by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. Tabler has played in 36 games, collected 138 ground balls, and caused 61 turnovers.
Coach Murphy had this to say about the most recent activity within the team.
"These five guys were selected by their peers to represent our program on and off the field this season and as a staff we couldn't be happier. Each one of these young men brings their own style and unique qualities to the table. Their continued focus on the 'Big Three' [academics, athletics, and social behavior] has already started rubbing off on our other student-athletes.
"New Balance and Wight's Sporting Goods continue to do an outstanding job outfitting our men with the best apparel and gear. We were once again blown away by what they came up with for our guys to wear on game day. I know everyone involved with our program is grateful for their sponsorship." The Eagles will sport their new duds this Sunday at 1:00 pm at Boucher Field when they will welcome the Nor'Easters of the University of New England in the season opener for both teams.
