LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Despite a second half push by Justin Martin and Justin Thompson with a combined 23 points, the Eagles fell just shy of a comeback by a bucket, 77-75, to Ramapo College in the D3hoops.com Classic on Friday evening.
It was a slow start for the Eagles as the Roadrunners held off Husson's offense throughout the first five minutes of the game until DJ Bussey drained a 3-pointer. Following another three by Bussey and Brett Cunningham, Husson captured the lead for the next ten minutes before a layup by Matt Latka gave the Roadrunners a leg up, 27-26. Ramapo closed off the half on a 15-7 run with a seven-point edge, 40-33.
Ramapo continued to extend their lead into the second half, pushing away from the Eagles after Corey Kaiser had closed the gap to a couple buckets off a layup and free throw, 47-44, with 13:35 left to play. The Roadrunners broke away on a 19-4 run over the next eight minutes shutting down the Husson offense, leaving the Eagles with an 18-point deficit to comeback from with less than six minutes remaining.
Following a pair of threes by Martin who led a comeback in the second half scoring 13 points after only netting two in the first period, the Eagles ran the court with a 22-8 advantage over the course of four minutes to only trail the Roadrunners, 74-70 with 1:13 left in regulation. A layup by Thompson and another 3-pointer from Martin brought the score within a point, 76-75, with only six seconds on the clock, but there wasn't enough time for Husson to get the ball back and even the score as the Eagles dropped, 77-75.
Justin Thompson led the Eagles on the scoreboard with 21 points which ties the most in a game in his career, along with five boards and three assists.
DJ Bussey contributed five 3-pointers combined with shooting 4-5 from the charity stripe for 19 total points.
Justin Martin netted 15 points along with board rebounds.
Leading all scorers and spending the majority of his time behind the free throw line, Kashaun Barnes drained 26 points while shooting 13-14 from the charity stripe.
Rob Lewis fell just shy of a double-double with his 17 points and nine boards.
Matt Latka also fell short of a double-double with eight rebounds and ten points.
