BANGOR, Maine -The Husson University men's basketball program and head coach Warren Caruso have announced their schedule for the 2018-19 season. This year will mark Caruso's 25th season as head coach at Husson.
The Eagles will start off their 91st season on November 10th as the Pine Manor Gators travel to Newman Gymnasium for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game. During halftime, Husson will celebrate the program's 49 1,000-point scorers by unveiling a new banner for Newman Gym. Over 20 former Husson greats are expected to attend.
Husson will travel to the University of New England's Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament, taking on Trinity (Conn.) on November 16th in the opening round. This will be the first meeting against the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) school. Husson will wrap up the tournament on November 17th facing either Fitchburg State or the University of New England. The Eagles hold a 57-10 lead in the all-time series vs. the Nor'Easters and the series with the Falcons is currently tied with one game apiece.
The green and gold will continue their difficult non-conference schedule with a trip to Newton, Mass. to take on Lasell College (13-14) on November 26th. This will be the 7th meeting between the two schools as the series is tied at threes and the first matchup since the 2006-07 season.
Husson will trek home to take on Bates (12-12) on December 4th, looking to end a seven-game losing streak to the Bobcats. On December 8th, the Eagles host in-state rival, the Monks of Saint Joseph's (16-10), in the 2nd Annual Alumni Cup as well as the 8th Annual Husson Sports Hall of Fame Game. Last season, the Eagles won the first Alumni Cup with an 84-75 victory over the Monks. Men's basketball alumni Scott Nance '92 will be honored as he is inducted into the Husson Sports Hall of Fame over the weekend.
On December 17th, the Eagles will travel to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (16-12) to take on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Runner-Up last year. It will be the first contest between the Engineers and Eagles in five years.
Husson will finish up the first semester with a trip to Las Vegas to compete in the D3hoops.com Classic playing two teams that appeared in last year's NCAA DIII National Tournament for the first time in school history. The Eagles will face the North Central (Ill.) College Cardinals (19-9) on December 27th and the Ramapo College Roadrunners (25-7) on December 28th. Last season, the Cardinals were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by Wisconsin-Stevens Point (72-55) while the Roadrunners were knocked off in the NCAA DIII Semifinals by National Runner-Up Wisconsin-Oshkosh (73-57).
The Eagles have two non-conference games scheduled in the second semester at Colby College (11-13) on January 27th and Bowdoin College (15-9) on February 5th. Husson's non-conference schedule features 11 games, eight of which will be against teams with a .500 record or better in the 17-18 season. Their non-conference schedule will be readily prepare the team for North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play.
The NAC will have a different look this year as conference rivals New England College, Colby Sawyer College, Castleton State, and Green Mountain have all left the conference. Two new members joined the NAC including UMaine-Presque Isle and SUNY Canton. The Eagles will play a 14 game NAC schedule, opening up conference action with a trip to Vermont facing Northern Vermont-Lyndon on November 30th and Northern Vermont-Johnson on December 1st.
This season will mark the first time in 55 years that Husson, UMaine-Farmington, UMaine-Presque Isle and Maine Maritime Academy are conference basketball foes, while it will also mark the first time since Husson, UMaine-Farmington, UMaine-Presque Isle and Thomas (Maine) were members of the NAIA when they previously were conference basketball rivals.
The NAC Tournament will start on February 16th with the quarterfinal round followed by the semifinals and finals on February 22nd and 23rd, respectively.
