BANGOR, Maine - The Husson Men's Basketball team continues to attract out of state talent as they received a commitment from an Arizona combo guard. Derrick "DJ" Bussey enrolled at Husson following a standout post high school season at the New York International Academy (NYIA) in Endicott, New York.
At NYIA, Bussey ended the season averaging 24 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals per game highlighted by a career best 41-point clinic. The 6-foot-1 point guard played four years of basketball at Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Peoria, Arizona. Bussey showed his offensive prowess by averaging 21 points per game while shooting 95% from the free throw line and 56% from the floor. During the 2015 FIBA U18 National 3x3 tournament, Bussey won the skills challenge championship. He followed that championship by being named All-Maricopa County Honorable Mention in 2016.
"DJ is coming a long way but we are excited to add him this late in the recruiting season" says head coach Warren Caruso. "DJ is a very dynamic combo guard that will add to our roster's versatility. We have a great class coming in to add to our returners. We are looking forward to getting started."
Husson graduated three seniors off a 21-7 squad which captured the program's 6th North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championship in the last nine years and their 4th in the last five years. The Eagles recorded their 5th straight 20+ win season and 33rd consecutive winning season. Bussey joins Corey Kaiser of Evans HS (Florida), Kyanti Blyden of Broward College (Florida), Cole Thomas of Master's Academy (Florida), as well as Jarrod Chase of George Stevens Academy (Maine), Justin Thompson of Schenck HS (Maine), and Coty Hackett from Burley HS (Idaho), in the 2017 recruiting class.
