JOHNSON, Vt. – Both teams stepped onto the court today coming off of wins last night as the Eagles and Badgers face each other for the second time this year out on the Badger's home court. Husson (13-6, 12-2 NAC) once again emerged victorious over Johnson State (8-12, 5-8 NAC) ending a weekend of wins with a score of 76-69.
After the first basket of the game by Eagle's Justin Smith, the Badgers set the pace of the match leading the scoreboard for the next five minutes. That is, until Mitch Worcester drove in for the layup, drawing a foul, then draining his free throw, to push Husson into an 11-9 lead. In the following three minutes, Johnson State's Kawaun Chavis tied up the score twice with remarkable precision from the charity line and 13:51 on the clock, bringing the score to 11-11, then two minutes later causing the draw again at 15-15. Finally, the Eagles broke away from the Badgers diving into a 13-4 run started by Cameryn Williams' layup and ending with Hayden Tomlinson from Johnson State draining a 3-pointer to narrow the score gap to 22-28.
In the final five minutes of the first half, Husson kept their score up averaging ten points ahead of Johnston State, led by Raheem Anderson netting seven of the Eagles fourteen points. Going into the second half, Anderson also led the Eagles overall by accumulating fifteen points and establishing nothing but perfection from the free throw line. He wasn't the only player making 100% of his foul shots; Badger's Chavis also made 4-of-4 helping him lead his team at the half with ten points. Three players contributed eight points apiece, Johnson State's Marqwon Wynn, and Husson's Worcester and Justin Martin who also dominated under the hoop gathering up eight rebounds.
The Husson men stepped onto the court after half time confidently with a score of 44-30 over Johnson State.
The second half started off very slow with a three minute scoreless lull on the court as each team struggled to get the ball in the basket. Finally breaking into the final fourteen minutes of the game, both teams managed to add on an even nine points bringing the score to Husson up 51-41. Not long after, another lull struck in the eighth minute leaving both teams at a loss from the floor for two more minutes, finally broken by Martin from the charity line for Husson.
On the day, Eagle's Martin, not only showed his second consecutive double-double coming out of last night's game, but his second against Johnson State this year and fifth overall this season with twelve points and fifteen rebounds. Anderson also set a pattern from the previous game out in Vermont, continuing to prove complete composure from the foul line as he made a flawless 8-of-8, adding onto to his 23 points that game. Another standout player was Worcester throwing in the second most points of the game at eighteen.
High scorers throughout the day for the Badgers were Wynn with seventeen points and Chavis with fifteen points. Demetrius Slade also helped out his teammates by handing out five assists.
The Eagles will have two days to get in a well-deserved rest before they head out to Colby to make up a rescheduled snow game on Tuesday, February 7th at 7:30pm.
