NORTON, Mass. - Wheaton College (5-3) defeated Husson University (1-6), 5-3, in non-conference field hockey action on Friday evening at Nordin Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Wheaton started the contest with two goals within the first ten minutes and a third goal for a three-zero lead in the 20th minute. Hannah Arkin scored first at 2:57 with an unassisted chip into the high right corner of the net, just before Lauren Bartlett scored with a drive from the top of the circle off of a penalty corner insert from Michelle Connolly at 8:35. Sarah Yates connected with Connolly in a scramble in front of the net in the 20th minute for the Lyons' third tally.
Arika Brochu put Husson on the board with a line drive to the net on a penalty corner that deflected off the stick of a Wheaton defender and into the net at 24:23.
The Eagles used that momentum and continued to challenge the Lyons from that point on. Sadie Royer deposited a pair of goals to level the score at three, scoring just 30 seconds into the second half and again in the 52nd minute.
Liz Helmreich's two late goals in the final ten munutes of the contest secured the 5-3 victory for the Lyons.
Andrea Shaggy made eight saves over 70 minutes of play while her counterparts, Wheaton's Morgan Karnes and Greta Reilly combined to save ten shots in the victory.
Husson outshot the Lyons, 19-14, and finished with a 14-9 edge in penalty corners.
With the result, Husson falls to 2-1 in the history of the series with Wheaton College (Mass.). This contest also marked the first game between the two schools in six years.
The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, October 2nd, when they host Colby College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference matchup at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
