BABSON PARK, Mass. - Senior midfielder Mikala Toth scored in the 44th minute to help Husson (13-5) upset #5 Babson (17-5), 1-0, in a first round matchup of the 2017 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament at MacDowell Field on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Eagles pick up the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament win and breaks the single-season wins mark with their 13th victory on the season.
With the loss, the 2017 season comes to a close for Babson.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a scoreless first half, Toth blast a shot from the left side of the circle past Babson keeper Deirdre Barry for what proved to be the game-winning goal with 25:58 remaining in the second half.
Husson's senior keeper Anne Marie Provencal (13-5) made 11 saves to notch her first shutout of the year and 4th of her collegiate career to pick up her 13th win on the season, breaking a three-way tie for the most wins in a season by a keeper with Kelly Bocchino (12 in 2007) and Maicee Gustin (12 in 2012). Barry (17-5) had one save in the losing effort.
Babson held the lead in shots (16-6), and shots on goal (11-2) in the loss, but the Eagles had the advantage on penalty corners (7-5) in the victory.
With the win, Husson picks up their first-ever win over Babson College and avenges a 2010 setback at the hands of the Beavers in the program's first-ever NCAA tournament game by a score of 4-3. The Eagles improve to 1-5 all-time in the National Tournament and this marks the first-time in program history Husson has defeated a ranked opponent.
Husson will now travel to Middlebury, Vt. on Saturday for their Sweet 16 matchup with #14 Rochester (N.Y.) (17-3). Game time is set for a 2:00 p.m start.
