Shawn Smith enters his sixth season as the Husson baseball outfield coach in 2019.
Since joining the coaching staff prior to the 2014 season, Smith has helped guide the Husson baseball program to four winning seasons with a combined 111-93 (.544) record with two NAC runner-up finishes, and one ECAC Tournament berth, while coaching one Conference Player of the Year, one Conference Pitcher of the Year, one Conference Rookie of the Year, and 15 All-Conference, two Conference All-Sportsmanship Team, eight Conference All-Tournament Team, 16 Conference All-Academic, nine ECAC All-Academic Honor Roll, six ECAC All-Academic President's Honor Roll, one NEIBA Senior All-Star Game, three d3Baseball.com All-New England, one NEIBA All-New England, one All-ECAC New England one ABCA/Rawlings All-New England selections and four Eagle Award Winners.
Prior to joining the Eagle coaching staff, Smith was a four-year letterwinner as a pitcher/outfielder for the Eagles from 2010-13, the two-time All-Conference selection batted .332 in 153 career games with 175 hits, nine homers, 21 doubles, 15 triples, 117 RBIs, 56 walks, 48 stolen bases, a .480 slugging percentage, a .402 on base percentage (OPS), a .882 on base plus slugging percentage (OPS) a .889 stolen base percentage, and holds a career .981 fielding percentage. As pitcher, in six appearances, Smith pitched 7.0 innings with a record of 0-1, three saves, four strikeouts and walks, while posting a 3.86 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP.
Smith ranks third in triples, fifth in RBI, sixth in stolen bases, tied for sixth in total bases (253), tied for eighth in fielding percentage, tied for ninth in saves, tenth in hits, tied for 13th in extra-base hits (45), tied for 14th in games played, 17th in runs (104) and tied for 17th in home runs.
As a senior, Smith posted his best season in a Husson uniform with an .417 batting average (28th highest all-time), with 63 hits (ninth most all-time), 30 runs, seven doubles, four home runs, eight triples (second most all-time), 45 RBI (tied for eighth most all-time), 17 stolen bases, a .649 slugging Pct. (20th highest all-time), a .474 on-base pct. and a 1.123 on-base plus slugging pct. (25th highest all-time), while not committing an error in 94 chances. Smith also recorded the sixth most total bases with 98.
Following the season, Smith was named Conference Player of the Year, while earning All-New England honors from the ECAC, NEIBA and ABCA, and the Eagle Award. Smith also became the first player in program history to be selected to play in the NEIBA Senior All-Star Game en-route to being named Husson‘s Del Merrill Male Athlete of the Year.
The three-time captain helped guide Husson to a 97-74 overall record with a NEAC East Division Regular Season Title, a NEAC East Divsion Championship, a NEAC Championship and berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2011 and a NAC Championship in 2013.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Husson in 2013 and Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2015.
A native of Winterport, Maine, Smith attended Hampden Academy.
