NEW LONDON, N.H. – April 14, 2018 – The Husson University baseball team split a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) games with Colby-Sawyer College on a chilly Saturday morning. Colby-Sawyer walked off with the 2-1 win in game one, while Husson took game two 2-1.
Colby-Sawyer goes to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in the NAC. Husson goes to 11-13 overall and 7-5 in the NAC.
GAME ONE – Colby-Sawyer 2, Husson 1
Husson sophomore hurler Jesse Colford (Bangor, Maine) held the Colby-Sawyer bats in check allowing just two hits over the first six innings.
The Chargers doubled their hit total in the seventh and came back with two runs for the walk-off victory. Freshman Charlie Danaher (Guilford, Conn.) led off the inning with a single to center. Senior Drew Inglesi (Franklin, Mass.) attempted a sacrifice bunt and reached on a bad throw from the third baseman, which also sent pinch-runner Brendan Barrett (Nashua, N.H.) to third. As Barrett was heading towards third, another bad throw from the first baseman allowed him to score the tying run. After Inglesi advanced to third on a groundout, sophomore Tim Unczur (Danvers, Mass.) was called upon to pinch hit and he delivered a base hit to right center that scored Inglesi with the walk-off win.
Colby-Sawyer freshman Noah Yeingst (Middleboro, Mass.) tossed a complete game, allowing just the one run, to earn his first collegiate victory.
Colford took the loss for the Eagles with 6.1 innings of work and no earned runs.
Husson junior Alex Chapman (Westford, Vt.) led all players with two hits.
GAME TWO – Husson 2, Colby-Sawyer 1
Husson struck first again in game two with a run in the top of the second. Junior Luke Covey (Milton, Vt.) led the inning off with a walk. He stole second and advanced to third on an error. With a squeeze bunt play on, Covey broke for home and scored after the pitch got away.
The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Mike Wong.
Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the bottom half of the six on a sacrifice fly from senior Joey Fenuccio (Keene, N.H.) that scored senior Dougie Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.).
The Chargers tried to mount a two-out rally in their final at-bat getting two runners to reach on a walk and a hit by pitch, by Husson was able to get out of the jam.
Senior Cody Collins (Bangor, Maine) earned the complete game victory for Husson giving up one run on three hits with six strikeouts.
Avellino recorded two of Colby-Sawyer's three hits on the day. With those two knocks, Avellino now has 100 career hits.
Senior Connor Henry (East Boston, Mass.) was saddled with the loss for Colby-Sawyer. He went 5.1 innings with one earned run and five strikeouts. Senior Andrew Carbone (Lynnfield, Mass.) pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up one hit.
The Eagles travel to Bowdoin on Wednesday, April 18 for a single-nine inning game.
