WINTER HAVEN, FL. – The Mitchell College Mariners (5-4) defeated the Husson University baseball team (3-3), 10-1, on Thursday evening.
Mitchell scored their first run of the game in the top of the 1st inning. Kyle Hartenstein scored an unearned run on Tyler Pina's ground out. The Mariners led 1-0 after one.
In the top of the 2nd and 3rd, Mitchell would add a run in each inning. Jack Finnegan scored on Tristan Hurley's sacrifice fly in the 2nd. Garet Griffin doubled and pushed across Francis Prettitore during the 3rd inning. They held onto a 3-0 after three innings.
The Mariners scored six runs over the 6th and 7th innings. Hartenstein drove in four RBI on two doubles, while Rolando Marcano singled home a RBI in the 6th. Mitchell would extend their lead to 10-0 in the 8th inning off a Tyler Pina homerun.
The Eagles broke up the shutout in the bottom of the 9th. Christina Corneil tripled to lead off the inning. Matthew Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to left field. Corneil scored on the sacrifice to cut the lead to 10-1.
Christian Corneil paced the Husson offense with two base hits and one run scored. Matthew Smith had the lone RBI in the loss. Conor Maguire was tabbed with the loss while throwing 5.2 innings and allowing six runs (four earned).
Kyle Hartenstein and Tyler Pena combined for five hits and five RBI for the Mariners. Axel De Jesus earned his first win of the 2017 by going seven innings, striking out seven, and allowing no runs.The Eagles return to the diamond for a double header tomorrow, Friday, March 10th at 9:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. against WPI in Winter Haven, Florida.
