BANGOR, Maine - Husson University head cross country and track & field coach Kate Goupee is pleased to announce the addition of Kerwin Whitney to her coaching staff. Whitney will serve as the assistant coach for the men's & women's cross country team and the sprints & jumps coach for the men's & women's indoor and outdoor track & field teams.

"We feel fortunate to have Coach Whitney accept a position on our staff," said Goupee. "This fall he has quickly proven an asset for both the staff and athletes due to his wealth of knowledge and passion for the sport."

Prior to joining the Eagle coaching staff, Whitney spent 19 years coaching cross country and track & field at the high and middle school levels. In those 19 years, he spent 15 seasons coaching indoor track at Mattanawcook Academy, serving as an assistant coach from 1995-2006 and the head coach from 2011-2015. Whitney served one season as the Mattanawcook Academy's head varsity cross country head coach in 2014 and four seasons as the assistant cross country coach at Mattanawcook Junior High School from 1999-2002.

During those 37 seasons/19 years, Whitney coached numerous individual Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) champions, nine individual state champions, and dozens of individual PVC and State medal winners. Eleven of coach Whitney's high school student-athletes qualified for the New England Championship Meet.

He also coached his daughter to an eighth place finish in the 5K Racewalk at the USAT&F Junior Olympics National Championship, where she earned USAT&F Junior Olympics All-American status.

Whitney earned a diploma in Electrician's Technology in 1994 and an Associate Degree in Trade and Technical Occupations in 1995 from Eastern Maine Community College. He later earned his Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Maine in 2006. He is currently in his thirteenth year as a high school math teacher at Penobscot Valley High School in Howland, Maine.

A native of Chester, Maine, Whitney attended Mattanawcook Academy. He and his wife of 36 years, Elizabeth currently reside in Chester, Maine. The couple have two children: Justin and Sarah (and husband Shey) and one grandson Beau.
