24 Eagles Named to Winter/Spring 2016-17 NAC All-Academic Team

WATERVILLE, Maine - A total of 152 student-athletes, including 24 from Husson University, have been named to the 2016-17 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Winter/Spring All-Academic Team after the spring 2017 semester.

Women's lacrosse led all sports having five student-athletes honored. Baseball, softball, and women's outdoor track & field followed close behind with four student-athletes awarded on each team. Men's and women's basketball, men's lacrosse, and men's outdoor track & field landed two apiece. 

The NAC All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes on varsity sports teams who have earned a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore academic standing and competed in a minimum of two years of varsity competition at their institution.

Of note, all nine seniors who were recognized as the Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sport were also honored on the All-Academic Team. Those selections include baseball student-athlete Steven Jurkiewicz (Castleton; Essex Jct., Vt.), men's basketball student-athlete Benjamin Holl (Johnson State; Philadelphia, Pa.), women's basketball student-athlete Nicole Menard (Johnson State; Milton, Vt.), men's lacrosse student-athlete Carl Diethelm (Green Mountain; Asheville, N.C.), women's lacrosse student-athlete Allison Granata (New England College; Norwalk, Conn.), softball student-athlete Jennie Moore (Johnson State; Peachem, Vt.), men's tennis student-athlete Jeffrey Mason (MCLA; Chicopee, Mass.), men's outdoor track and field student-athlete Sean Cabaniss (UMaine-Farmington; Vassalboro, Maine), and women's outdoor track and field student-athlete Kerianne Downing (Husson; Dedham, Mass.). 

The academic team also consisted of 26 Sportsmanship Team honorees. The NAC Sportsmanship Team is reserved for those who positively affected the culture and environment of their sport and whose behavior clearly demonstrated sportsmanship and integrity that went beyond the playing rules and etiquette.

Additionally, a number of this year's All-Academic honorees also excelled athletically. The team consisted of 35 student-athletes who were voted as All-NAC selections in their respective sports, including 25 First Team and 10 Second Team selections. Also listed are the Athlete of the Year honorees in four of the nine NAC winter and spring sports, which included men's basketball Defensive Player of the Year Justin Martin (Husson; Winslow, Maine), women's basketball Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Chandler Guerrette (Husson; Presque Isle, Maine), women's lacrosse Player of the Year Granata and Defensive Player of the Year Mackenzie Meegan (New England College; Phoenix, Ariz.), and softball Pitcher of the Year Kayla Wood (Dummerston, Vt.).
