Bangor, ME - The Husson University dance team placed first in their division at the annual New England Cheerleading & Dance Team Open Championships.
More than 90 teams competed, including nine collegiate teams.
“Being able to see our team come together as a family, creating memories while having fun is the best reward we could bring home” said Danielle Gough, a senior health care studies major from Toms River, N.J., and captain of the cheer team.
“Though we cheer at numerous home games for Husson teams, a competition like this gives us a chance to spread our wings and really showcase our talent as a team,” Gough added.
The co-ed cheerleading and dance teams are made up of 30 Husson students from across the state of Maine and New England. The teams support the football and basketball teams from the sidelines at all of Husson’s home games.
“Both teams performed beautifully,” said Husson coach Buffie McCue. “Considering the injuries we’ve sustained during this school year, they did really well. These squads have demanding schedules, especially during basketball season. These last few weeks have been difficult, but both teams rose to the challenge.”
McCue added that competition can be a great teacher.
“The Husson teams showed not only strength and athletic ability, but they also showed maturity and a willingness to dig deep to represent their school and their teammates. I am very proud of their efforts,” McCue said.
