UPDATE: Vote for Husson at NCAA.org for the Special Olympics Top Story

Bangor, ME – Student-athletes and coaches from Husson’s men’s and women’s soccer teams and cheering team volunteered at the Special Olympics Maine’s Central Maine Soccer Tournament on October 3, 2012. The event was held on a beautiful fall morning at John P. Boucher Field in the center of Husson’s campus.

The event drew over 70 Special Olympics participants, who participated in a variety of individual skills competitions and 5 versus 5 small-sided soccer games. Men’s and women’s soccer players monitored and recorded results at the skill stations and served as referees for the games. The Eagles cheerleading squad was out in full force to support the participants throughout their games and the Olympic awards ceremony at the end of the event.

The day was marked by spectacular displays of athleticism and competition, marked by the Special Olympics Athletes’ Oath: "Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt." Husson assistant women’s soccer coach Amanda Gifford, who was instrumental in organizing the event with Special Olympics Program Director Mark Capano, said of the event, “Our student-athletes, athletics department, and Husson community as a whole are so proud to be a part of such a worthwhile, meaningful event. This is our fourth year partnering with Special Olympics Maine to put on this soccer tournament, and we look forward to many more.”
