Saxl Park is the home to Husson’s women’s and men’s cross country teams, officially dedicated in 1984, was named for Joseph Saxl, superintendent of the psychiatric hospital from 1974 to 1981. During his tenure, Saxl decided to put to use the overgrown former farmland on hospital grounds. He initiated extensive landscaping work to convert the park into a recreation and leisure area for patients and the public is located between State Street and Mount Hope Avenue in Bangor, Maine.
This very pleasant trail system is a series of loops going through a large field with a small pond near the northern end. Some sections have stone dust surface, others are simply mowed paths. There are several benches for those who want to rest and enjoy the surroundings. Bobolinks nest in the field. The approximately 75 acres of undeveloped land along the western boundary provides habitat for birds and other wildlife that can be viewed from the park.
